Trailer: The Pirates! Band of Misfits

PG for comic leprosy, award-grubbing, several hundred instances of the word “booty”

Release Date: April 27, 2012

Alas, another depressingly retrograde take on pirates. If you ask me, we need some children’s entertainment that speaks to the modern reality of Somali pirates.

Now, if you asked parents, they might refuse to let their kids watch a claymation farce depicting the semiautomatic weapons and brutal tactics of modern Somali pirates. But that’s just more evidence for what I’ve been saying for years: When it comes to decisions about children, parents are the last people we should trust.

  1. While parents are not to be trusted, perhaps we can have an alternative for the particularly squeamish: a poignant documentary about the MIT students who are conferred pirate certificates (see: ). It will feature lots of swashbuckling — drawn from the kind of gallant bravery only a student who wakes up at 8am to register for a boating class has. It will also feature some heartwarming moments and some slapstick, but probably not any romance (unless some seductive Wellesley girls cross-register).

    • Man. That’s exactly the sort of quirky, Oscar-worthy short documentary that our lifeless pirate culture needs right now.

But obviously there would be romance! The Charles River is nothing if not a place of romance.
